The theory of monogamy chisel

When I teach the work of wood, I speak much of monogamy. Not to your spouse (this is your problem), but to your tools. I think it is easier to learn to saw, sharpen and aircraft guidance if you jump in and use different saws, sharpening systems and bench planes.

And when it comes to scissors, I am super-monogamous (whatever it is).

Pretty well, I use a single bench chisel for almost everything - except to mortise. This is a 1/2 "chisel and it chops each tail (tails and pins), it does all the leather and (apart from rare) all physical facilities."

After years to deal with sets of chisels in increments of 1/8 ", I called it closes so unexpected and sold these estates. I'm four bench chisels and a mortising chisel. With less tools makes it easier to take care of them, they take up less space, and they leave you more money to buy equipment and nice wood.

Indeed, over the past years, my passion for a chisel radically influenced my recommendation on the purchase of chisels.

The typical question I get about scissors goes something like this: I really want to buy a nice pair of scissors, but I can't pay them yet. Thus far, should I buy used scissors or one of the inexpensive brands, such as Narex?

My answer was: buy used. But buy used with caution.

Now it is: buy a premium 1/2 "chisel of Lie-Nielsen, Lee Valley or one of the Japanese manufacturers of fantastic. Learn to give and love that only a tool. Then, when you have enough money, buy another format that you think that you might need for an upcoming project.

Want a 3/8 ", 1/4" or 3/4 "." And after getting four, you have no more. Heck, I rarely use the 3/8 "or 3/4".

I would like to say that this attitude goes in all in my wood working power. I still have a hammer Monkey on my back. I am four hammers that I use. I know, I know. If the hammer were wives, I would be a felon in each of the 50 States.

You want your tool collection down to the tools you really need reform? I wrote a book on the subject in 2011, called the "anarchist Toolbox", which was named among the 12 books of carpentry 'must - have' furniture & Cabinet magazine. You can get a copy at ShopWoodworking here.
