Router trick to plunge depth adjustment

ArouterDepth_1411A plunge router is a versatile tool, but put an exact depth can be confusing. There are a couple of buttons and levers which control will go the little how far down, but if you are trying to make an exact adjustment, run quickly out of hands and patience, how to fight the sources of and set a ruler. There is an easy way to do it; Here is how the depth of the mother-of-Pearl inlays on the face of the Voysey mantle clock I have for the August 2013 issue of popular woodworking magazine. If you click the photo, you will be shown a larger version that will give you a better look on what I'm doing.

First, I placed the template (a plywood circle) located on the face. Because the template is so small, there was no room for clamps. I put some double-sided tape of the template and also drove a screw through the template and Walnut face and in my Bank. ARouter_1409 With everything sure I the router on the template and lowered the bit until it bottomed out on the face and deep lever locked. Then I flipped through the router to the head. I released the depth stop rod, stuck a piece of inlay between the rod and the stop on the router base, pushing the rod and tightened it.

That changed my attitude from where it was (the surface of the face) where I it - wanted to see the face due to the thickness of the deposit. When I went to make the cut, was the lever so the switch router over the work was all I had to do, and put it on the position of the stops and locks the lever back. No measurements, no digits, and right on the money.

We filmed a top end video of me building the clock. It is a great project and to the video in our shop.
