Shade is not only protection from the Sun it stands for solar homes adaptation of desert balance, is the name of eco building developed in collaboration between Arizona State University and the University of New Mexico. The stand-alone energy and water efficient House addresses the unique challenges of the suburban sprawl of the southwestern cities such as Phoenix and Albuquerque. The project is designed to work in harmony with the desert and offers affordable housing at the same time an option for the growing population in the Southwest.
The shadow House includes some sustainability strategies such as passive heating and cooling , are unique in the desert and intense water management. The focus is also on adaptability as would the residents make a long-term strategy around the House for the various types, choose to live it in the course of time. Adaptability of the House is achieved through modularity; If residents need to expand the House, they can connect prefabricated modules on a single seam - a system of the shadow team. Adaptability in the shade House is also achieved a flexible floor plan, contains Flex space and moving walls.
A speciality of the House, which the desert is relatively mild climate for most of the year, the use of inside and outside spaces. The House is equipped with several terraces, including a generous southern patio, which expands the living space.
